SIX QUESTIONS WITH JOSIAH
Date of Birth:
05 September 1991
The Back Beach. I learnt to surf there and still love surfing there
My favourite wave is:
My biggest and most intense wave ever was at:
Yanerbie Bombie. I was 15 at the time and it was the first time I surfed decent sized waves. I was towed into a solid 15ft wave by my father (Jeff) and remember dropping down the face, hanging on with just my toe nails coming off the bottom before gunning for the channel. As I fell into the safety of the deeper water, I felt the feeling only a surfer knows and knew I was hooked on surfing intense waves.
My biggest wipe-out was at:
A break a couple of years ago. After a few sessions of getting away with stuff by the skin of my teeth I was reminded that nature is in control. It was a reasonably big day (15-18ft) and I was setting up a big barrel with all the confidence of a teenager and suddenly caught a rail on some chop high upon the face. I immediately started cartwheeling down the face of the wave and I didn't penetrate the water till I got to the bottom of the barrel before getting one of the most violent thrashings. I lost count of the twists and possible depth I could be at.
As I was beginning to run out of air the wave let me go and I began my struggle to the surface. I popped out of the water only to realise the next wave was seconds away from undoing all my textbook survival/swim strokes. This second hold down was the best type of hold down, manageable, soft and removed me from any threat of a third one.
Returning to the surface blue, beaten and feeling pushed to the boundary, my dad ripped me from the clutches of the ocean and as soon as we reached the channel turned around to ask or rather tell me "Quick, grab the rope, there's another set coming"
You should vote for my videos because...
I thoroughly enjoy surfing intense waves and would love for it to be a full time career. Having this opportunity is a big deal for me and winning it would be one of the highlights of my career thus far. Please vote for my videos to help me do what I love more often.”
